Real Food: What to Eat and Why
I read Nina Planck’s book about real food versus industrialized food about a month ago. I really like how Planck encourages the reader to eat more foods like our grandparents ate: foods fresh from the farm (including the often forbidden meat, dairy, and bread). Yeah, it’s ridiculous to think that current dieting trends generally want us to cut out those BASIC food categories! Though I agree with Planck that we need to steer clear of the fake processed foods, I’m not totally convinced that eating a lot of meat is healthy. I have started reading two books by Michael Pollan which suggest that meat should be considered a side dish, not a main dish. I think this is a much healthier suggestion. While I do recommend reading Real Food, be forewarned that the author is a bit repetitive and doesn’t come across as the expert she’d like you to think she is. She does explain why raw milk is better than processed milk… which I found very informative and helpful. I’ll let you know what I think of Pollan’s books (Omnivore’s Dilemma and In Defense of Food).

I have talked about it before, but, the Ancient Near East farmers would only “kill the fatted calf” on special occasions because it cost a lot of money. Meat was more of a treat back in the day.
I agree, I think we should treat it as a side…unless it is buffalo wings, today’s equivalent to the fatted calf.
